The Masonry Institute of Iowa has awarded FEH Associates Inc. its 2006 Masonry Award for Creative Re-Use of a Building for its design of the expanded Onawa Public Library.
Ed Storm, AIA, FEH principal and project architect for the Library expansion, said a combination of design and selection of materials created a 10,000-square-foot addition to the 6,000-square-foot Carnegie Library that preserved the historic integrity of the building’s original 1908 Arts and Crafts style.
The quartzite, used along the exterior base of the building, came from the same L.G. Everist (www.lgeverist.com) quarry in Jasper, Minn., as the library’s original stone. An experienced stonemason from the quarry visited the construction site and instructed area masons on the proper techniques for shaping the rock to match the existing random stone mosaic pattern. Endicott Clay Products Co. (www.endicott.com) of Fairbury, Neb., custom manufactured oversized paver brick to replicate the original size and color of the existing brick.
