ONAWA PUBLIC LIBRARY

Onawa, Iowa

FEH Associates helped preserve the historic integrity of Onawa’s 1908 Carnegie Library while tripling its useable area. The project combines a 9,600 square foot addition with a 6,000 square foot remodeling. FEH’s design places emphasis on extending the style and materials of the original building. The resulting new space creates a central entry leading to an “alley” corridor between the expansion and the existing library. This open corridor features a water wall that accents a new elevator which opens to a second floor balcony overlooking the addition and a restored upper level meeting room. The new space features computer stations, a children’s library area and an adult reading space that looks out onto a city park. Remodeling converted ample main level space to accommodate the libraries popular genealogy section. Plans included a geothermal well system for heating and cooling.
