Sioux City, Iowa
FEH led design that restored Sioux City’s Sioux City’s magnificent 2,600-seat Orpheum Theatre to its 1927 splendor. Ornamental plaster work, materials, finishes, colors and character were restored to original condition within the parameters of modern function. Restoration or replacement of the theatre's 300 light fixtures included a new30-foot cut-crystal main chandelier. Seating was respaced for additional comfort. Modern amenities include expanded restroom facilities and ADA access and seating. FEH also engineered the replacement of 17 feet of concrete balcony cut away when the theatre was converted to a twin cinema in the 1970s and the recreation of original theatre loges. Design also enhanced the existing air plenum HVAC system with use of a geothermal well. With attention to historic detail, the project went on to earn the 2001 Iowa “Preservation At Its Best” award.
